The Australian Zoo outside of Brisbane is owned by Steve Irwin’s family. In case you are ever in doubt about this, Steve’s picture is on EVERY sign, along with his signature outback expressions. Still unsure? The gift shop has action figures of his daughter and official zoo “crikey khakis” that match the attire of the staff and entire Irwin family.
Apart from the obvious ties to the show, the Australian Zoo was an AWESOME experience. The zoo has gone above and beyond to create large, natural environments for the animals. The cassowaries have their own mini forest. There are several different eucalyptus groves for the different koalas. Best of all, the kangaroos and wallabies have large, open reserves of more than an acre where they can run, lounge about, and eat what they please. The people can do the same, and in the same space. I got to pet the kangaroos and feed them from my hand. We saw a mother with a joey just big enough to poke his head out of the pouch. We also observed and touched echidnas and koalas. And I actually saw a platypus, allowing me to finally overcome my skepticism about their existence. Mr. Irwin, this zoo is a beaut of a billabong!
